After the storm checklist

Use this list after hail, wind or heavy rain. Do it in order, and keep your notes and photos together.

1. Stay safe. Stay clear of downed power lines and anything that looks unstable.
2. Photograph everything. Take wide and close-up photos of damage from the ground, with dates.
3. Protect your home. Cover openings or leaks if you can do it safely. Keep receipts for emergency repairs.
4. Check inside. Look for ceiling stains, drips or wet insulation, and photograph them.
5. Call your insurance company. Ask how to start a claim and what they need from you. Read your policy.
6. Get a second set of eyes. Have a roofer you trust look at it before you sign anything.

Safety first: stay off the roof and off ladders if it is wet, icy or windy. Look from the ground, take photos, and call a pro if you are unsure.
